Practice

Designer or decorator?

Both matter, and IDAN welcomes both. They are different disciplines.

Interior designers

Apply technical knowledge of space planning, building systems, materials, ergonomics, lighting and safety to shape how an interior works as well as how it looks. They coordinate with architects, engineers, builders and suppliers.

Interior decorators

Specialise in the aesthetic layer: colour, finishes, furniture, soft furnishings and styling.

Nigeria's interior design services market is growing at around 7.7% a year, with rising demand across residential, corporate, hospitality, healthcare and retail work.

How we work

One specialist voice in a larger team.

Architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors and interior designers each carry a piece of the work. The best spaces happen when every piece is in the room from the first drawing.

IDAN makes the case for interior design as its own specialist discipline: brought in at the planning stage, accountable for how a space performs, and present in public infrastructure as well as homes and offices.

2007

IDAN is founded

Founded by Titi Ogufere with a founding board of Ekua Abudu, Munirat Shonibare, Anselm Tabansi, Moni Fagbemi, Sarah Daniel and Mathew Eshalomi.

2017

African Culture and Design Festival

IDAN hosts the inaugural festival in Lagos, in partnership with the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI).

May 2025

A sixth president

Jacqueline Aki is invested as President and sets out three pillars: Structure, Visibility and Advocacy.

June 2025

New National Executive Council

The Council is inaugurated in Lagos. Programmes that follow include the IDAN Lessons webinar series and the CEO Roundtable.

October 2025

African Interior Design Congress

The first AIDC, “Designing Africa's Future”, convened with ACIAD and Design Week Lagos. The Institute of Professional Interior Designers and Product Inventors is launched the same week.

June 2026

A new identity

IDAN unveils its refreshed identity ahead of its twentieth anniversary. The FCT chapter hosts the Abuja Interior Design Summit.

September 2026

Listening Session and #AskIDAN

Members are heard at the IDAN Listening Session on 9 September, and the Executive begins answering members' questions on camera every Wednesday. IDAN members join the Big 5 Talks panel "Who pays when interiors come last?" at Big 5 Construct Nigeria.

October 2026

New channels and the first NIDS

IDAN relaunches its channels around a new direction, "Beyond the finish", and convenes the first National Interior Design Summit, Interiors as Infrastructure, ahead of its twentieth anniversary.
